REI Stores Closed/Free Shipping

When I order something from REI or REI outlet I always opt for “In store pickup” to avoid paying shipping charges. It is an hour+ roundtrip to REI, so I usually have a couple in stock in-store items to pick up while I am there. Not many, my Dividend this year was 50 cents.

With REI stores closed shipping is now free. REI members with a dividend or yearly 20% off coupon (good through April 6) burning a hole in their wallet take note.

I hope (don’t know?) REI is doing something in co-op conscionable fashion to help their store employees.

Many of the big outdoor stores in the U.S. are having aggressive sales constantly. My inbox gets emails from them almost every day. Too bad I'm not in the market for anything.

From their FB page:

Q: Are you paying your employees during this time?

A: Yes. Employees will be paid during this temporary closure.

Me neither, hence last year’s REI Divided of 50 cents. REI Outlet/Garage does not pay a dividend, and I do look at the REI Outlet “Deal of the Day” once a week or so.

Clicking on the “Deal of the Day” brings up the next week’s worth of one-a-day specials.

Coming up, clothes, clothes and more clothes. Or summer frocks and diaper bags. Occasionally boots and shoes, which I would never buy on-line and un-test fitted in the store. But, a couple times a year, a piece of actual gear, tent, pack or bag, will come up at 50% off.

I didn’t need anything, but one son will be needing a new pair of flip flops by this summer. Size 13 feet, he is hard to fit flip flop wise, and will destroy cheap flip flops in short order. Today’s Deal was men’s Del Mar Sole sport flips, and REI Outlet had size 13.

Even at 50% off (seriously, freaking regular priced $80 for flip flops?) $39 for flip flops is a bit much, but with a 20% off coupon, 50 cent dividend and free shipping. . . . . eh, crap, that’s still $30.

I guess these aren’t five & ten store “stepped on a pop top, blew out my flip flop” footwear. I have a similar pair of arch-support, thick soled, grippy tread and slight heel flips from Chaco that have proven bombproof for years of wear. I’m willing to take a buy-once cry-once chance.

I do like drying my tootsies out around camp after the water shoes or mukluks come off, and so does he. I do wish he wore a size 12 like me, just in case I ever need to “borrow” them.
