I gather this dispute was a long time in the making and an alternate portage has already been set up but the shorter portage is now closed permanently.

I’ve done both the established carry and the stream that was the subject of the lawsuit. For me I prefer the carry. That is one twisty turning marsh land with beaver dams. I don’t recall any significant sights on the stream, and you couldn’t get out on land to explore. Personally, I would take the carry even if the stream was permanently opened for access.
